The client work glossary.
Short, plain definitions of the words that come up when you build Squarespace sites for clients.
Change Request
A change request is a formal ask to alter work that has already been agreed or delivered, such as adding a page, rewriting a section or changing a feature after launch. In web design, each change request is reviewed for its effect on cost and timeline before work begins, so extra work is approved and paid for.
Client Portal
A client portal is a private, login-protected space where a business and its clients share project information: messages, files, requests, status updates and payments. For web designers, it replaces scattered email threads with one place where clients can see what’s happening on their site, what’s next and what they owe.
Code Injection (Squarespace)
Code Injection is a Squarespace feature that lets you add your own HTML and scripts to specific parts of a site, such as the header or footer of every page, without editing the template. It’s available on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy plans, and is often used for analytics, fonts and third-party tools.
Revision Round
A revision round is one complete cycle of client feedback and designer changes: the client reviews the work, sends all their requested changes together, and the designer makes them. Web design contracts often include a set number of rounds, such as two or three, with any further rounds billed separately.
Scope Creep
Scope creep is the gradual growth of a project beyond what was originally agreed, through extra pages, features or revisions added without a matching change to the budget or timeline. On web design projects it usually arrives as small, reasonable-sounding requests that add up to unpaid work.
Squarespace Contributor
A Squarespace contributor is anyone the site owner or an administrator invites to help manage a Squarespace site, with roles that set what they can access, such as Administrator, Website editor, Billing or Store manager. Contributors sign in with their own Squarespace account, so nobody has to share a password.
Website Care Plan
A website care plan is a recurring service, usually billed monthly, in which a designer or agency looks after a client’s website after launch. It typically covers small content changes, updates, monitoring and support, with a set number of hours or requests included each month and extra work billed separately.
Website Feedback Tool
A website feedback tool lets clients or reviewers leave comments directly on a web page, pinned to the element they mean, instead of describing changes in an email. Most capture a screenshot and details such as browser and screen size, and turn each comment into a task the designer can track.
